Congressman John James and Republican Study Committee Propose Extreme Budget That Would Cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid
MACOMB, Michigan- The Republican Study Committee (RSC), whose members include Congressman John James and 80% of House Republicans, last week proposed its budget for Fiscal Year 2025.
Some of the highlights of the budget include:
Raising the retirement age for Social Security benefits.
Making permanent the 2017 Trump Tax Cut, which would overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the middle class.
Defunding the IRS by cutting $87 billion from their budget. This would dramatically enforce the ability of the IRS to investigate and enforce tax evasion by wealthy Americans and corporations.
Reducing SNAP access with additional reporting requirements for program participants.
Block granting the Supplemental Security Income program, which would allow states to make cuts to aid low-income elderly and people with disabilities.
Block granting Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Affordable Care Act subsidies. It would also impose harsher work requirements on these programs.
Ending the expanded subsidies for Affordable Care Act health insurance plans that were created in the American Rescue Plan. This would cost millions of Americans an average of $800/year.
Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care
“The Republican Study Committee budget would make devastating cuts to programs that Michiganders count on. Congressman John James has tried to pose as a defender of Social Security and Medicare but his membership in the RSC raises questions about his priorities when it comes to cutting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. We are calling on Rep. James to make clear whether he is in support of the RSC budget and to oppose these draconian cuts.”
