Michigan Families for Fair Care Condemns President Trump’s Decision To Raise Costs
Michigan Families for Fair Care Executive Director Steve Lawson issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to raise costs for Michiganders:
“President Donald Trump has taken another step towards fulfilling his promise to cut taxes for the ultra-wealthy and making everyone else foot the bill. Trump’s tariff Executive Order is one of the many policies Republicans have laid out to boost federal revenue and clear the way for a billionaire tax cut policy that is estimated to cost more than the $2 trillion bill he signed in 2017, and as much as $10 trillion.
Michiganders are first on the front lines of Trump’s new trade war since the tariff order targets the neighboring country of Canada, which has already made clear that they will retaliate, which could mean much higher costs for consumers. Congressional Republicans, like Rep. John James, have yet to talk to constituents about their plans to rubber stamp Trump’s trillion-dollar tax cut for billionaires.
Rep. James has remained largely absent as Michiganders prepare for the financial toll tariffs will have, like increased costs for car maintenance, gas, and the over $28 billion worth of goods we receive from Canada. We are sorely lacking in congressional leadership as House Republicans are considering additional budget cuts to vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP to help fund their tax scheme. We urge everyone to reach out to their Congressional office and tell Congressman James to oppose any plans that raise costs for the working class.”
