The People Have Spoken: “Congressman James Keep Your Hands Off Our Health Care”
Today, Michigan Families for Fair Care, Macomb County Commissioner Michael Howard III and members of SEIU Michigan delivered roughly 800 petition signatures to Rep. John James’s office in Warren urging the Congressman to not cut Medicaid. Right now, over 2.6 million Michiganders rely on Medicaid for access to affordable health care services and Rep. James has recently voted to lay the foundation for nearly a trillion dollars worth of cuts to the vital service.
Rep. John James is a member of the House and Energy Committee, meaning he will be the first in line to decide how much the federal government will cut from Medicaid to make room in the budget for tax cuts for the wealthy. The GOP Tax Scam is expected to cost the country over $4 trillion dollars in the next decade, while causing irreparable damage to families in Michigan. These petitions are from Rep. James’ own constituents urging him to not vote in favor of these devastating cuts.
Michigan Families for Fair Care Director, Steve Lawson:
“Rep. John James has the ability to stand up to corporate interests and greed, plain and simple. Currently, the American people are under attack from every direction. The cost of groceries and services continue to climb, and a sudden price hike in people’s health care coverage would put them at risk of going without lifesaving care. If John James wants to be on the side of the working class, he needs to show us he understands that Americans need a helping hand, not to be kicked while we’re down.”
“If Medicaid is under threat, then everything is under threat. If you’re gonna attack Medicaid then it is only a matter of time until you attack Medicare,” said Macomb County Commissioner Michael Howard II. “If you’re a so-called party of family values… your actions do not dictate that.”
