A Statement From Michigan Families Fair Care On House Republicans’ Failure To Keep The Government Funded For Americans

MACOMB, Michigan- Yesterday, Congress attempted to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) in an effort to keep the government funded before its shutdown deadline of September 30th.  House Republicans put forward an extreme proposal that would have abandoned over 255,000 veterans in Michigan and nearly 170,000 Social Security beneficiaries in the congressional district alone.

Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care:
“Rep. John James already has a history of voting to cut funding for the Social Security Administration and veterans benefits. Those were not votes in line with the values of the constituents he represents in Congress. If James was truly concerned about what is included in this bill, he would not be afraid to talk to his constituents and ensure their needs are being met. Instead, he spends his time with billionaires, protects their interests by co-sponsoring a bill that gives them major tax breaks, and expects a pat on the back when he chooses to support legislation that was already dead on arrival."
