Michigan Families for Fair Care Joins Leaders in Washington, D.C. from Across the U.S. to Commit Congress to Fair Tax Reforms in 2025
Michigan Families for Fair Care and local advocate Jocelyn Howard — a turnaround school specialist from Warren, MI flew to Washington, DC last week as part of a delegation of over 200 regular people urging their members of Congress to make the ultra-wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share.
Jocelyn Howard, Warren Resident and Turnaround School Specialist
“As an educator and a constituent of Congressman John James, I see firsthand how the current tax policies impact our families and communities. I flew from Michigan hoping to speak to Rep. James about how he could be on the right side of history, and consider not extending legislation that supports the wealthy over Michiganders. Though Rep. James refused to speak to me, his own constituent, I hope he’ll hear this: ‘This tax law would hurt small business, educators, and so many more in our great state of Michigan. Michiganders can’t afford to wait any longer for relief.’ It’s time for Congress to do what’s right and put the needs of everyday people above special interests.”
With parts of the 2017 GOP Tax Law expiring next year, Howard was one of 200 advocates from 22 states urging Congress to fight for tax fairness on behalf of educators, small businesses, and lower income Michiganders.
Steve Lawson, Michigan Families for Fair Care Executive Director
“This was a pivotal moment for Michigan Families for Fair Care, and while our work isn’t done, this trip marks an important step towards a tax system that truly supports working families across the country.
These meetings in Washington showed how much this tax law would negatively impact not only Michiganders, but so many across the country. We need community leaders like Jocelyn who are using their voice to show these harmful laws impact so many in our community. We thank Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow for taking the time to hear Jocelyn’s story. Though we did not get the chance to speak to our own Congressman, know that Michigan Families for Fair Care will continue to make sure that Rep. James sides with his constituents and not corporations.”
