On Friday, Michigan Families for Fair Care, Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate, and State Rep. Donavan McKinney held a town hall to discuss the effects tax legislation, and economic policy have had on Black men in Michigan.
This conversation served as a follow up to the “Cuts and Conversation” town hall that focused on the socio-economic issues and challenges that impact Black men in Michigan based on recent nationwide coverage highlighting this as a main concern within the community.

Many Black Michiganders voiced their concerns, shared experiences, and explored solutions to improve the economic and social wellbeing of their communities. They are not alone, as Black men across the state have raised their voices in a call for policy that will uplift their families and provide equal opportunity for them.
Despite the large economic recovery effort that has taken place since the tumultuous effects of the pandemic, the wealth gap has only continued to widen between classes and especially between races. Economic policy that favors the wealthy has only worked to broaden the divide as the country’s tax burden has fallen on the shoulders of the middle class. Congress is set to take action as provisions from the 2017 Republican tax law are set to expire in 2025, but groups like the Republican Study Committee are already making budgetary plans that seek to preserve policies that benefited the ultra-wealthy.
State Representative Donavan McKinney:
“This town hall is about ensuring our voices are heard and our needs are met. The issues we discussed today– tax fairness, jobs, healthcare– affect every one of us, and it's critical we advocate for real change. The time for action is now. Economic policy that benefits the middle class, and Black men especially, are made real by the decisions we make every day. So if we want the rich to pay their fair share, if we want help with our health care needs, and if we want our businesses to thrive, we must do something about it.”
Michigan Families for Fair Care Director, Steve Lawson:
“Our goal is to highlight the challenges faced by Black men in Michigan and push for equitable solutions that support their economic and social advancement. The turnout and engagement today show that our communities are not only aware of these issues but are eager to work together for meaningful change. We must continue this momentum, advocating for a fairer tax system, accessible healthcare, and strong educational opportunities to build a better future for Michigan families.”
