State Rep. Donavan McKinney Joins Michigan Families for Fair Care For A Community Turkey Giveaway
On Monday, Michigan Families for Fair Care, Michigan State Rep. Donavan McKinney held an event to give away free turkeys for people in the Detroit/Warren area for Thanksgiving dinner.
This event followed a series of town halls that focused on the socio-economic issues and challenges impacting Michiganders statewide. According to Feeding America, nearly 1.5 million Michiganders are facing food insecurity, and coupled with the continued high-cost of groceries, many are worried about how they will afford a Thanksgiving meal.

State Representative Donavan McKinney:
“This turkey giveaway sends a message to our community: we are here and we got your back. Many families in this state, and especially in our district, worry every day about how they are going to afford putting food on the table. We want to let them know that for at least one night, dinner is on us.”
Michigan Families for Fair Care Director, Steve Lawson:
“All throughout this year we have heard over and over, whether it was at a back-to-school backpack drive or free haircuts at a barbershop, people are struggling to get by. We knew a turkey giveaway was the least we could do, but as long as it makes a difference for one family’s Thanksgiving meal we know we’re making a difference. As long as we continue looking out for one another, we’ll keep fighting for long lasting economic justice and demanding more from our elected officials in Congress.”
