Michigan Families for Fair Care Condemns Republican Efforts To Raise Costs To Fund Tax Cuts For Millionaires

Michigan Families for Fair Care Executive Director Steve Lawson issued the following statement in response to Republican leadership plans to implement tariffs and cut social programs to fund tax cuts:

“Republicans have laid out their plan to boost federal revenue and clear the way for a millionaire tax cut policy that is estimated to cost an additional $5 trillion, more than the $2 trillion bill President Trump signed in 2017. Michiganders are on the frontlines of Republicans’ economic warfare as proposed increases in tariffs are expected to target countries like Canada, who has already made clear that they will retaliate, which could mean much higher costs for consumers.

Congressional Republicans like Rep. John James have yet to talk to constituents about his plan to rubber stamp Trump’s trillion dollar tax cut for millionaires. Rep. James appears to be indifferent to the massive impact tariffs will have on Michiganders, like increased costs for car maintenance, gas, and the over $28 billion worth of goods we receive from Canada.  Additional budget cuts to vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP are also on the table to help fund their effort to extend tax cuts for millionaires. We urge Michiganders to reach out to their Congressional office and tell Congressman James to oppose any plans that raise costs for the working class.”
