Michigan Families for Fair Care, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, State Rep. Donavan McKinney, and State Rep. Kimberly Edwards Celebrate Black History Month During Cookout and Conversations Event
On Friday February 28th, Michigan Families for Fair Care, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, State Rep. Donavan McKinney, State Rep. Kimberly Edwards, and Macomb County Commissioner Michael Howard III celebrated Black History Month during our Cookout and Conversations event that helped bring small business owners, activists, elected officials, and the local community together. The event was focused on talking about an issue that is on everyone’s mind, the future of our country’s economy.

Black Michiganders are worried about the impact of the Trump Administration’s trade war and how it will increase the cost of goods. Many community members made it clear that Congress needs to focus on the needs of the working class rather than pass a GOP Tax Scam that aims to pad the bottom line of the wealthiest people in the country.
Community leaders expressed their frustration with the lack of leadership from our congressional elected official, Rep. John James, whose silence has been palpable in the face of cuts to vital government resources. As Republicans in Congress outline their plans to cut billions of dollars worth of health care services, many are concerned they are going to be left behind. Since Rep. James sits on the committee that will decide whether to slash Medicaid funds, we have to demand that he sit down with his constituents and justify his position immediately.
State Representative Donavan McKinney:
“During a time when we should be celebrating the achievements of Black Americans, we are instead having to spend time worrying about how we are going to afford our bills at the end of the month. This administration has made it clear that they are looking out for themselves, and are unafraid of leaving entire communities behind. As local electeds we refuse to accept the executive branch’s vision of the future, and will work tirelessly to protect our funding, our health care, and every single family living in our district.”
Macomb County Commissioner Michael Howard III
“The wealthiest people in the country do not deserve tax cuts that are bankrolled by nearly a trillion dollars worth of cuts to health care services, plain and simple. The Trump administration is pushing for mothers, babies, and the elderly to go without critical services in the name of greed. Our community is always underestimated, but we will make our voices heard when you come for us. History will prove us right, just as it has time and time again.”
