Michigan Families for Fair Care Urges Congressmen John James And Tom Barrett To Vote No On Cuts To Medicaid
Michigan Families for Fair Care Executive Director Steve Lawson issued the following statement before the upcoming House budget resolution vote:
“Today, House Republicans, like Rep. John James and Rep. Tom Barrett, are planning to vote on whether to cosign on the Trump agenda and decide the fate of tens of millions of Americans. If passed, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which Rep. James is a member of, will plan to cut $880 billion, which would likely come from Medicaid.
Currently, more than 2.6 million Michiganders, 961,000 of which are children, rely on Medicaid for their health care coverage, and nearly a trillion dollars worth of cuts would be catastrophic for these families. Medicaid is crucial, it finances almost half of all births in the country, allows rural hospitals in Michigan to keep their doors open, and allows one in five adults in the U.S. to have reliable health coverage. These guys are playing with people’s lives here just so they can fund tax breaks for billionaires. Congressmen James and Barrett, we urge you, for the sake of your constituents, don’t vote to cut programs your constituents rely on.”
