What They’re Saying: Metro Detroiters React to President Biden’s State of the Union Address

MACOMB, Michigan-  Last night, Michigan Families for Fair Care hosted a watch party where Detroit residents could share their responses to President Biden’s State of the Union speech with their fellow community members.

Residents reacted positively to the president’s comments on his mission to lower drug prices by capping the cost of insulin and negotiating lower prices through Medicare for drugs treating heart disease and arthritis, which will save millions of Michiganders money.

Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care

“The contrast between Joe Biden’s record and Rep. John James’ record couldn’t be clearer. President Biden worked with Congress to protect and improve the Affordable Care Act. Insurance plans are now cheaper for the over 300,000  Michiganders who buy their insurance on the Health Care Exchange. John James has supported repealing the ACA and called it ‘a monstrosity.’ I hope he will change his mind and work with the president to continue to protect and improve the ACA.”

Here’s what more Detroiters had to say:

Michael Howard, Warren Resident:

“I’m so grateful that President Biden and Democrats in Congress gave Medicare the ability to  negotiate prescription drug costs. I was happy to hear the president highlight that tonight as it will lower costs for people like me. I applaud the president's call for Congress to expand the Inflation Reduction Act and hope that Rep. John James will support his efforts to lower costs even more.”

Susan Diliberti, Clinton Township Resident:

President Biden continues to fight for lower health care costs. From capping out-of-pocket insulin costs and allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices to calling for an expansion of those policies, the president clearly showed his commitment to lowering healthcare costs and supporting seniors. In contrast, Rep. James voted to cut funding for the Social Security Administration and make it harder for seniors like me to access our Social Security and Medicare benefits.”

George Higgins, Warren Resident:
“I was happy to see the president talk about bringing down healthcare costs, including a crackdown on junk fees. It’s outrageous for already profitable big corporations to gouge people with junk insurance, surprise bills, fees, and unclear pricing. I’m disappointed Rep. John James hasn’t joined the president in supporting a crackdown on these fees.”
